Project 1: Hard Surface Modeling

⇢ Choosing a Hard Surface Reference

Hard Surface Modeling involves creating objects with angular, rigid surfaces and intricate details. These models are typically mechanical or man-made, featuring structured and well-defined components such as screws, seams, bolts, and panel lines. Hard surface models often emphasize precision and high complexity, showcasing features like sharp edges, hard angles, and geometric details. Examples include vehicles, machines, weapons, or architectural elements.

For this exercise, I decided to recreate a weapon from the Lies of P as I had the game and could take the reference photos that I would need to make it. The weapon I decided to recreate is called the Circular Electric Chainsaw.

Since in the game itself the weapons are able to be separated into two parts for customization purposes, I decided to confront the model in the same way.

   ⇢ Process - Handle

I started off building the handle from a cylinder as I thought that would be the easiest since it was very cylindrical to begin with, with a few adjustments of course.

   ⇢ Process - Blade

After this, I started on the blade itself. Instead of using the rectangular part of the cylinder, I decided to use the circular part of the cylinder.

I did think that I could make the screw a part of the blade for easier transition but did not follow through since it would be a hassle if there was a mistake to reposition the shape and applying the material itself.

Even so, I did add an extension in the middle to fill in the gaps as it was hollow in the middle of the weapon and I wanted to emulate that within my model.

   ⇢ Process - Final Touches

I did try to follow the colors within the reference pictures to the best of my abilities but when it rendered fully, it looked a bit darker from the reference pics.
