Project 2: Theme Scene-Based Modeling

   ⇢ Choosing a Reference

creating a scene-based environment using one of the following general themes: Sci-Fi, Medieval, Steampunk, Cyberpunk, or another theme of your choice.

For this project, I had the choice of either doing a scene-based model of an interior or an exterior and I chose to do an interior.

I wanted to go for a grungy feel to the interior and referenced Bar Lupin, a bar that I found through one of my favourite shows and this pixel art of an interior from Pinterest.

   ⇢ Planning

I went for an isometric view of my model and using the references above, I planned out the layout of the bar that so I would know where the placements of the items and how many there are in the model.

   ⇢ Modeling the items

I started to model the stools, chairs and tables first. I started off with making the cushion first by using a square and using the subdivision module to make it round. I then proceeded to make the stem of the stool and made one of those stepping parts (I have no idea what you call it) out of an extruded 3 sided circle, beveled the edges and hollowed out the inside.

Now I would put in the pictures for the chair and the table but I was too locked in to remember to screenshot my progress, so I will proceed to describe it to you to the best of my abilities.

For the chair, I used a cube to make a very rectangular 4 legged-chair and then moved the vertices inwards to create a sloping effect. Using the knowledge on how to build the cushion for the seats, I also created a chair cushion as well, for the illusion of comfy-ness.

For the table, I used a cylinder and extruded and scaled to fit and beveled the edges for a more gradual angle transition between the table head and foot and the stem.

I then proceeded to do the cupboard, the door and the counter together since they were all connected to the walls of the model.

   ⇢ Rendering

I tried to take screenshots of this process but every time it would either a) cause blender to lag like crazy, b) cause blender to crash and c)both at the same time, so I had to sacrifice it (alongside a few plans of the final model)

I knew I wanted to go for grunge, noir aesthetic (if I had to pinpoint a decade probably the 1980s) for the bar so I went for a colour scheme of reds, browns and dark blues (borderline black). I really wanted to make the red standout so I only applied it to the cans and the cushions. I coloured in the wines, and tried to make the glasses glass-like but it kept on making my laptop crash so I used a different colour to substitute it.

To bring the aesthetic somewhat together, I used a few vintage bar posters and put them on my wall.

At this point however, my laptop would be running 2 frames per whenever so I couldn't get the proportions exactly how I wanted and had to cut out the wine glasses and the glasses that were supposed to be featured within the cupboards.

To send off to final render, I used a deep warm lighting to sell the "after hours" feel of the bar, or even the feeling of clocking out after a night shift at said bar. Before my final render, the light power was too low (50) and I forgot to add in the roof of the model. So I bumped it up to 150 and slapped a cranium on to my model.
