LECTURES

Week 6 - Typo 5 Understanding
Understanding Letterforms
Uppercase letterforms assumingly looks symmetrical but upon closer look, they aren't. The can easily identified when the stroke weights of the form are unique and in turn, the arc that forms around teh bracket are also unique.

Week 7 - Typo 6 Screen & Print

Week 8 -

Task 2 (20%)

Learning Goal: These activities will help and benefit you in your quest to learn theoretical and practical knowledge in Typography, preparing you to take on the module's duties. (To illustrate the usage of grids, layouts, and page flow, as well as the abilities and sensibility required for efficient typographic communication and achieving a good reading rhythm with memorability.)

Submission: E-Portfolio (with all the information gathered documented logically and chronologically in the portfolio for the duration of the task in one post)

    Exercises:
  • Express typographically the 3 text options given in a 2-page editorial spread (200mm x 200mm per page). No images are allowed (unless permitted). However, some very minor graphical elements, i.e. line, shade, etc. might be allowed.
  • Explore several options in expression and layout (sketches). Execute a good layout, with an expressive and appropriate headline in line with the spirit/message of the text
    Deadline: Week 8 (14th June 2024)

Progress Work

For this task we were given 3 excerpts with titles of  The role of Bauhaus thought on modern culture, A code to build and live by and Unite to visualize a better world. I chose Unite to visualize a better world and started brainstorming on Ibis Paint.

figure 1.2 & 1.3 Exploration of sketch 1

figure 1.4 sketch 2

I wanted to explore the emphasis on VISUALISE and A BETTER WORLD since those seem to be the key topics in the essay and the title. With this in mind I did more brainstorming on Adobe illustrator.

figure 2.6 Final face-cover

It's text formatting time! Originally I went with figure 2.3 and figure 2.5 for my face-cover since it was the one that was looked appealing whilst sending the message of the topic (also I wanted to explore 2 different concepts). Here were the results!
figure 3.1 text formatting test 1

I wanted the text to mirror the placements that I made with the face-cover
figure 3.2 text formatting test 3

I formatted the text to be align right to give the title space to breathe.

Although these formats are pretty good in my humble opinion, after making what is deemed the final face-cover, I reformatted everything to fit that piece to see what could be done.

figure 3.3 first look for the final

I quite liked it! The ripping effect (that I tried to recreate on Adobe Illustrator) really carried through the pages. This ended up to be my favourite piece out of the three so I sent it to the Facebook group to get feedback!

Feedback Time!
Ms Hsin was alright with my composition but the readability of the text could be improved on by trying out a drop cap and decreasing the letter size due to the current word count for a single line is too little. Here is the final result!
