Intercultural Design Task 2

 TASK 2 (Week 4 - 5)

After we got our proposals back, following the lecturer’s decision we decided to pursue our first proposal on the project: Malay Rock Culture. This is where our research came in, where we had to find people to interview and observe the environment that birthed/had a few instances of Malay Rock Culture.

Data collection

At this stage, the data is collected in different ways to support the design and implementation of our project. As a result, we started conducting a data gathering collection process about Malay Rock Culture, with relevant information to the theme and our research objectives.

We did this using t methods of research, which are as follows:

Observation study -

We planned and observed a few places to visit which are Merdekaraya (coined as the birthplace of rock culture in Malaysia) and Rumah Api (marketed as a place where there is no discrimination and a hot place for bands to play in). I also planned on going to a live band concert from @faye.faire on ig to observe the environment during a band set performance.

We didn't get to visit the places but we have some footage of a band set from the @faye.faire

Interviewing band members -

In this kind of information gathering, we asked Ayeem of the band Patriots, Shika of Tingtongketz and Cheryl of Shh...Diam and Article 19:

How has rock music changed over the years?

Do you think that rock music is a form of freedom of speech?

How are the events treated as?

How did the expansion when it comes to Rock Music change in Malaysia?

Cheryl of Shh...Diam & Article 19

Ayeem of  The Patriots

Shika of Tingtongketz

Through this type of interview, we learn about the culture of Malay Rock and the extent of its impact on the band, the events, and their feelings towards the genre over time as these bands have existed from the earliest of 2006 till now.

Thus, we recognize Rock music’s impact closely from the band's own point of view where there are government sponsorships at the cost of censorships.

Public Surveys -

At this stage, we conduct comprehensive and detailed survey to gauge what the public thinks of Malay Rock Music.

Obtaining online research material -

At this stage, we conduct comprehensive and detailed research on Malay Rock Music to collect as much information as possible that can help us design our project and value support. We searched for general knowledge about Rock Music, the history, the venues, their under-lying problems and the perceptions that garnered the public.

We also collected information from News outlets, and from the following article, we learned how Rock music venues have been affected by the instances of complaints and the achievements that bands have had in Malaysia that propelled them forward into stardom. Some of the information that we got from this video is:

  • Rock Music Malaysia has had a bad reputation that caused the shutdowns and the displacements of multiple venues

  • There has been multiple cases of humiliation towards rock bands either live or physical

  • There has been multiple back and forth between the rock culture and the government

Rock Music serves as a means of connecting individuals with diverse social circles they might not have otherwise encountered, making it the rope that helps bring and foster new relationships within the community.

Moreover, it has also been used as a therapeutic tool by certain people, as they have an outlet that for them to express their emotions without expecting backlash. For them, getting to know rock music helps them successfully create communities where they could bond and support a specific rock band.
